Three monkeys are on the loose after a truck overturned in Mississippi, but confusion persists as to whether they are carrying diseases like hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID.
The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office reported the crash on I-59 near mile marker 117, about 75 miles east of Jackson, on Tuesday, noting that several 40-pound monkeys that are “aggressive to humans and require PPE (personal protective equipment) to handle” had escaped.
Video shows monkeys crawling through tall grass on the side of the highway with wooden crates labeled “live animals” broken and scattered nearby.
At the time, deputies said they were told by the truck driver that the Rhesus monkeys were carrying disease and came from a testing facility associated with Tulane University in New Orleans.
