Once again, seasonal shoppers can gather in downtown Mitchell and enhance their shopping experiences after West Perth council approved a proposal by the Downtown Mitchell Business Improvement Area (BIA) board for the temporary closure of Poppy Lane.

BIA co-ordinator Trish McNaughton told council during a recent meeting that last year’s first-time venture to close off the one-way street beside the downtown cenotaph, known as Poppy Lane, was successful. In fact, they’re also hoping the municipality allows for the permanent closure of vehicular traffic to create a year-round outdoor community-use space that reflects all seasons.

The BIA is currently exploring the development of a dedicated communal space within the downtown core, and McNaughton said she feels this space
