Growing up, local photographer Jalani Morgan’s favourite Blue Jays player was Devon White — a centre-fielder who contributed to the World Series wins in the ‘90s, and more importantly to Morgan, a star player that looked like him.

He can remember witnessing the Blue Jays win their first World Series title on his birthday in 1992 and “losing it” as an 11-year-old.

But as he started to grow older and understand visual culture, something hit him.

“I was like, ‘Wait a minute, Black folks are not centred in baseball narratives,’” said the West End Phoenix photo director.

It’s why he’s been building a visual record and archive of Black Blue Jays fans, families and community on the streets and at home since 2018 on his social media pages.
