A pledge calling on Montreal to be an anti-apartheid city and support the Palestinian cause is factoring into the municipal election campaign, with more than 100 candidates and two party leaders supporting it.
It comes as Montreal has felt the ripple effects of the Israel-Hamas war over the last two years, with regular pro-Palestinian protests and frequent calls from Jewish leaders for the city to do more to combat antisemitism.
As of Wednesday, the pledge had been signed by 53 Transition Montréal candidates, 48 Projet Montréal candidates and three candidates from Ensemble Montréal.
Both Projet Montréal Leader Luc Rabouin and Transition Montréal Leader Craig Sauvé have signed it. Ensemble Montréal’s Soraya Martinez Ferrada has not.
