French Language Minister Jean-François Roberge is pressing McGill University to do more to ensure graduates can work in French, citing data showing that those who study in English — even francophones — are far likelier to favour English at work.

“There is a very strong correlation between the language of the last diploma and the language used at work,” Roberge told McGill officials at a National Assembly hearing Tuesday evening.

“No matter if you did elementary school, high school or even CEGEP in French — if you graduate in English, there’s a good chance you’ll work in English,” he said.

Understandably, the vast majority of anglophones and allophones end up working in English after graduating from Quebec’s English universities, Roberge said.
