On Tuesday, around 12 p.m. C.D.T., Melissa made landfall near New Hope, Jamaica, as a Category 5 storm with estimated maximum sustained winds of 185 miles per hour. Its Jamaica landfall was noted as one of the strongest landfalling hurricanes on record in the Atlantic. Melissa traversed across Jamaica on Tuesday, emerging into the northwest Caribbean Sea Tuesday night into Wednesday early. At around 2:10 a.m. C.D.T., Melissa made its second landfall near Chivirico, Cuba, as a Category 3 storm. Melissa's landfall in Cuba had estimated maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour.
