BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A team from the United Cajun Navy traveled from Baton Rouge to Jamaica to help assess damage and coordinate relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.
According to officials, southwestern Jamaica suffered extensive damage, with schools, homes, and a hospital all impacted by the storm. Hundreds of thousands of people are reportedly without power.

The United Cajun Navy reports its crew is standing by with food, water, and rescue teams ready to deploy as soon as it is safe.
The non-profit, which is headquartered in Baton Rouge, is also assembling disaster kits for survivors of the storm.
