PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- Seccond-degree murder.

After more than 12 hours of deliberations, a Peoria County jury found former Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy Sean Grayson guilty in connection with the July 6, 2024, shooting death of Sonya Massey.

Grayson bowed his head when the verdict was read. His family, several rows behind him clutched their hands together and prayed, staring up at the ceiling. On the other side of the second-floor courtroom, the Massey family looked crushed.

Some looked down; others cried. Still others stared straight ahead in disbelief. .

The verdict of second-degree murder can be seen as a win for Team Grayson, as he now faces at least four years and probably 20 years when sentenced. He's eligible for day for day "good-time" credit" which means he could serve only
