Young detainees are accessing a 24-hour rehabilitative radio station and its developers say it's changing - and saving - lives.

The Cobham Youth Justice Centre, in western Sydney, has access to Futures radio, which broadcasts a range of programming including music, education, cultural stories, fitness classes and meditation.

It is the only facility in Australia running the station, but its founders say expanding the pilot program will help young offenders break the cycle of crime by giving them access to productive material while they're locked in a cell.

Dominic Brook, a co-founder at Futures developer Musicians Making a Difference, said running the program cost about $100,000 a year for each centre, compared with about $1 million to luck up a youth offender.
