PORTLAND, Maine — With winter nearing, the holidays approaching, and a looming government shutdown, vulnerable Mainers — especially veterans — face growing needs, but help is available.
The Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services is hosting its seasonal Mobile Stand Downs, bringing together dozens of organizations to support veterans facing homelessness, financial strain, or other life challenges.
One such event took place this week in Portland, with another scheduled for Augusta on Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
At the Portland Stand Down, vendors offered on-site services for free, from healthcare consultations to job assistance, legal aid, and mental health support.
