CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A fisherman is dead after falling off the Edgewater Park fishing pier Tuesday evening, Cleveland fire officials said.
At 8:15 p.m., firefighters responded to the pier after someone called 911 and reported someone had fallen in while fishing, spokesman Lt. Mike Norman said. Witnesses said waves were four to six feet high at the time and had dragged the man under by the time firefighters arrived, Norman said.
By that point, officials believed the fisherman who fell in had died, so officials did not conduct an extensive search for what was considered a recovery operation, Norman said.
“It wasn’t water we could safely go in,” Norman said.
On Wednesday morning, a body washed up on the east side of the rocks, 50 yards east of the pier, Norman said.
