The Supreme Court has asked the Trump administration and Illinois to answer an additional question in a case involving the president's push to deploy National Guard troops in the midwestern state.

In an announcement on Wednesday, the justices said they needed to know just which "regular forces" could be sent to the Democrat-led state.

"The parties are directed to file supplemental letter briefs addressing the following question: Whether the term 'regular forces' refers to the regular forces of the United States military, if so, how that interpretation affects the operation of 10 U. S. C. §12406(3)," the top court wrote in a brief Wednesday note.
