Senate Republicans sent President Donald Trump a "symbolic" rebuke on Wednesday by voting to end the national emergency he declared in February, justifying his increase in tariffs on Canadian goods, according to a new report.

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that the Senate voted 50-46 on the bill to end the national emergency. Four Republicans joined with Democrats to end the emergency. Those Republicans are Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Rand Paul (R-KY), and Susan Collins (R-ME).

The Post described the vote as "symbolic" because it still needs to be passed by the House of Representatives, where similar attempts to rein in Trump's ability to impose tariffs have been blocked.

Trump initially imposed the tariffs under the auspice that Canada wasn't doing enough to stop the inflow of fentanyl into the U.S. through its borders.
