JAMAICA – AT LEAST 30 PEOPLE have passed away in connection with Hurricane Melissa in the Caribbean, as the storm continues to threaten the region on Wednesday, reports CNN . The storm made landfall in Black River, Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane with winds reported at 185 mph on Tuesday, before striking Cuba as a Category 3. Jamaican government officials have reported “catastrophic” damage from winds and flooding on the island; in Haiti, which suffered from severe rainfall, 25 were killed following a river bursting its banks. The U.S. State Department has said it is sending search and rescue teams, along with other aid, to affected areas.
