From 3 to 7 p.m., volunteers worked nonstop, loading boxes of food, including vegetables, grains, milk, and canned goods, into trunks to help feed families missing paychecks. For many, this marked the longest shutdown of their careers. Many of them sat in line at least an hour before the gates opened.
