CALEDONIA, Ill. (WTVO) — The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is planning significant changes at the intersection of Route 173 and Caledonia Road in Boone County, with a new roundabout project aimed at improving safety.

An open house was hosted by IDOT to discuss the proposed roundabout, which is currently in the preliminary engineering environmental study phase. The project comes in response to a history of accidents at the intersection, with 37 crashes and 18 injuries reported between 2019 and 2023.

"We have heard people in the past concerned about roundabouts in the general area, but realistically being the safety benefit on here, we do really want to try and get this roundabout out here as quickly as possible to improve that safety," said IDOT program development engineer
