LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

A new proposal would reallocate more than $5 million that Louisville Metro Government originally committed to a birthing center at Mary & Elizabeth Hospital — now on hold — to neighborhood projects and maternal health programs serving families in south Louisville.

The birthing center, expected to open this fall, is stalled after major Medicaid funding cuts, prompting District 15 Councilwoman Jennifer Chappell to introduce an ordinance that keeps the dollars working toward their original mission.

“It was there for initiatives around women and families and children, so I really want to make sure that we’re still making an impact with this money and still furthering that mission,” Chappell said.
