Food banks across the region are scrambling to meet growing demand as benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, (SNAP) are set to end this weekend due to the government shutdown, affecting millions in Illinois and Missouri who receive food assistance.
Rural areas see sharp increases
Joe Purl, director of the Wright City Community Food Bank, said most clients work but struggle in rural areas to make ends meet.
“We’re seeing a lot of increase,” Purl said. “But a lot of challenges that come their way, whether it be medical challenges, housing challenges. There’s a lot of that in the rural area.”
