WILLIAMSPORT — Lycoming County is offering a retirement incentive for employees to prevent potential layoffs due to what the commissioners say are budget issues they foresee in 2026.

“We’re not forcing anyone to retire,” Commissioner Scott L. Metzger said Wednesday. “We’re putting out an incentive.”

That incentive is a one-time payment to be paid on or before March 31, 2026, for those employees who retire before the end of the year.

The payment for individuals with more than 20 years of employment will be 15 percent of their annual salary, with those with between 15 and 20 years getting 10 percent.

Those eligible for a pension but do not fall into either of those two categories will be paid $1,000.
