PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A local business that specializes in handmade chocolates is making candies that everyone can eat.

Missionary Chocolates has been in Portland since 2008. Back when it began, Melissa Berry, a naturopathic doctor, was in her last year of medical school.

She made chocolates for her vegan mother and soon created a company after winning a festival competition.

"She really tries to kind of lift everybody up and really tries to stay very local, true to her nature, which is really allergen-free chocolate. It is gluten-free and nut-free and vegan, but it really is more chocolate for everyone. And just knowing that it's made by hand in the shop, we don't outsource our production anywhere and it just makes it really special," said Julia Markova, an employee at the business'
