BELL COUNTY, Texas — The University Interscholastic League (UIL) approved a proposal Monday that will prohibit foreign exchange students from competing at the varsity level in Texas high school athletics.
The decision, which takes effect in the 2026–2027 school year, has sparked debate among coaches and communities statewide.
Supporters of the rule say it protects opportunities for local student-athletes.
“They are allowed to get on a plane and come across to our state and play immediately, taking the place many times of a community kid that has worked hard to get that position on an athletic team,” Robert Lee ISD Superintendent Dr. Aaron Hood said.
Under the new amendment, exchange students will still be allowed to participate in athletics, but only at the sub-varsity level.
