FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — Changes in residents’ taxes continue to be a major topic of discussion in Fairfield County.

Last month, county officials voted to raise millage rates, which means an increase in property taxes. This week, county council members discussed the possibility of adding an additional penny sales tax.

Twenty years ago, Fairfield County voters approved a one-cent local option sales tax. Now, officials are considering adding a second penny tax on purchases made within the county.

While the proposal is still in its early stages, county leaders say this new tax would serve a different purpose. If approved, the additional penny tax would be a capital project tax, with the money used to fund major public works projects.
