ILLINOIS ( 25News Now ) - Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker declared an “agricultural trade crisis” in Illinois on Tuesday, signing an executive order aimed at helping farmers cope with what he says are devastating impacts from federal tariffs.
Pritzker said China bought $1.4 billion worth of Illinois soybeans last year, but those sales disappeared after President Trump’s trade war with China.
He said tariffs on Canadian imports have also raised prices on machinery and fertilizer. He also said Illinois farmers are losing $100 to $200 per acre as soybean prices have dropped.
Meanwhile, Argentina is now selling the soybeans to China that Illinois farmers used to sell, according to Pritzker.
