SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Devastation in the Caribbean as Hurricane Melissa has left dozens dead and is still moving towards the Bahamas, and some Sioux Falls nonprofits are reacting to the scenes of destruction.
Although the worst of the category five hurricane hit Cuba and Jamaica more directly, the excessive rain and high winds led to flooding, property damage, and loss of life in Haiti as well.
At the time of publishing, at least 25 Haitians have died, at least 10 of them being children, with 18 who are still missing. Nonprofits are assessing the situation.
In the midst of hurricane season, these storms are something citizens in the Caribbean have seen before.
