SUMNER COUNTY, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Sumner County Planning Commission met Wednesday night to discuss legalizing and regulating buildings made from shipping containers in the county.
The growing trend of using shipping containers to create homes, businesses and storage sheds is making its way to Sumner County. Since 2023, the county’s Building and Codes Department says they’ve seen eight shipping containers developed into buildings, although converted shipping containers are still not legal in the county.
“They’re still not legal in the county, but I would like to move in a direction that does make them legal,” said Planning Commission Chair David Klein. “We’re looking for always looking for different ways to come up with low cost housing. I think it’s a real good solution.”
