SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Following the massive hit from Hurricane Melissa, Cuba was next — following Jamaica — to be hit with historic winds and severe flooding.
WTOC spoke with Savannah local Layanet Acevedo ahead of Tuesday’s storm. She says her family, who still lives in Cuba, was not prepared for what came through.
“We are in the Caribbean, we know how to handle storms. However, the island had nothing,” she said. “There is no place to go… neighbors from my neighborhood are getting together and staying. Like, my house is stronger, let’s stay here because that’s the only way.”
She also said stores in her hometown were nearly empty, making storm prep more difficult and expensive.
