Starting Saturday, more than 70,000 Lucas County residents could be without SNAP and WIC benefits because of the federal shutdown. A lot of Lucas County families and kids will be stretching thin budgets heading into the holiday season. Our families face immediate food insecurity.
SNAP is a lifeline for working parents, seniors, and children across Toledo. Women and children are disproportionately affected because SNAP is used by families with children and WIC for women and infants. The Lucas County Health Department said that over 9,300 Toledo residents used WIC in 2023, up from more than 8,700 in 2022. As the shutdown goes on, local action is even more important.
