Sameer Suleman has been elected Speaker of the National Assembly, defeating Peter Dimba, Sandram Scott, and Lasten Vigalo in a closely watched parliamentary vote held today.
Suleman secured 134 votes, while Dimba received 85, with Scott and Vigalo failing to get any votes. The Clerk of Parliament announced that two members were absent and one member abstained.
Suleman’s victory positions him as head of the legislative arm of government, responsible for maintaining order and guiding debates in the National Assembly.
In the same sitting, the House also elected Mulanje Bale legislator Victor Musowa of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as First Deputy Speaker, after he garnered 134 votes, defeating Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who got 60 votes, and Ca
