The Green Mountain Job Retention Program is offering $5,000 to recent Vermont college graduates who choose to live and work in the state.
The program, a collaboration between the state government, the University of Vermont and the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation, aims to retain young talent and address the state's aging workforce.
This October, the program began releasing $845,000 in stipend awards to 169 students who graduated from Vermont higher education institutions in 2023, according to a press release. Nearly half of the recipients graduated from UVM.
Vermont is one of the oldest states in the country per capita, with 22% of its population above 65. The working-age population has dropped by more than a percentage point since 2020, according to the state's population estimat
