CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man was critically wounded in a shooting in the South Loop Wednesday night, Chicago police said.

The shooting took place at about 9:05 p.m. in the 1000-block of State Street.

A 32-year-old man told responding officers he was walking outside when a male suspect approached on foot, took out a handgun and shot him before fleeing, police said.

The man was shot in the back and transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

No one is in custody and Area Three detectives are investigating.
