TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA)— A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Bermuda as Hurricane Melissa is expected to approach the island later today and into tonight, the National Hurricane Center said.
Located about 215 miles northeast of the central Bahamas, Melissa is moving toward the north-northeast at about 21 mph.
Melissa is expected to continue accelerating northeastward during the next couple of days, the NHC said.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 105 mph.
Some strengthening is possible today before weakening begins on Friday, the NHC said.
The center of Melissa is expected to pass to the northwest of Bermuda today and into tonight.
Air Force Hurricane Hunters are expected to investigate Melissa this morning.
A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Bermuda.
