HARTFORD, Conn. — People across the northern Caribbean were digging out from the destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Melissa this week. Communities in Connecticut want to help those who have family and friends still living on the islands hardest hit, like Jamaica and Haiti.

The West Indian Social Club in Hartford held a meeting on Wednesday to help organize the disaster relief. For many people in the meeting, the disaster hits close to home.

Images and videos that were posted during the hurricane as it slammed into Jamaica were nothing short of horrific. Catastrophic winds blew roofs off houses, flooded rivers, part of a hospital, and more.
