India has been granted a 6-month exemption from US sanctions on operations at the Chabahar Port project in Iran, that came into effect on September 29, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on Thursday. The revocation of the waiver marked the end of a rare exemption once extended by Washington and placed renewed pressure on New Delhi as it navigated its regional strategy amid US sanctions.

On September 16, the Trump administration had said that it would revoke the sanctions waiver granted in 2018 for operations at the key port in Central Asia, a move that was expected to impact India’s role in developing the key terminal. The decision came as part of Washington’s "maximum pressure" campaign against Tehran.
