EAST LANSING — The minutes Wayne Matthews III lay on the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum turf felt like an eternity.
The senior linebacker fit the run play as he had many times before, delivering a seemingly typical hit to oncoming USC running back Waymond Jordan as the pile crashed around them late in the first half on Sept. 20. Defensive linemen Ben Roberts and David Santiago immediately knew something wasn’t right, however, and summoned Michigan State football’s medical staffers, who quickly surrounded Matthews.
