A month after Montreal implemented a partial ban on short-term rentals in the city, hundreds of owners appear to be flouting the bylaw, keeping their units available for tourists to rent.

The city has attempted to limit the number of Airbnb-style rentals in an effort to return units to the market amid a spiralling housing crisis, barring most owners from offering short-term rentals outside the period between June 10 and Sept. 10. But a search on the Airbnb platform shows many rentals continue to operate in violation of the bylaw. As of Monday, data collected by À bas Airbnb — a project documenting the impact of Airbnbs across Quebec — included at least 526 “illegal” listings contravening the new regulation.
