Several lab monkeys that were killed after they escaped a crash on Interstate 59 in Mississippi on Tuesday were leaving Tulane University's National Biomedical Research Center on the northshore, thrusting the controversial animal testing lab into the spotlight once again.
Tulane confirmed 21 monkeys were in the truck at the time of the crash. Three are still on the loose, five were killed by Mississippi authorities and the rest remained in their cages and were saved.
The Jasper County Sheriff's Department is investigating and said law enforcement "destroyed" some of the escaped monkeys after hearing from the truck driver they were infected with hepatitis, herpes and COVID-19. Tulane dispelled those claims.
