MONROE, La. (KNOE) - 23 year old Orson Wells was tapped to produce a live episode of the radio show Mercury Theater on Oct. 30, 1938.

The War of the Worlds was created as a dramatization of a Martian invasion of Earth.

Despite a warning at the beginning of the broadcast that it was all fiction, many listeners tuned in late.

Those listeners only heard the realistic sounding news reports, and some panicked.

The FCC investigation found that no laws were broken.
