The role of Indiana township trustee has at times been synonymous with scandal, with at least a dozen cases over the last decade of trustees being charged with everything from theft to forgery to official misconduct.

For opponents of township government, the scandals have cast a pall over the office and offered justification for removing this somewhat old-fashioned layer of local government in Indiana.
