Justice Surya Kant has been appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, set to take office on November 24, 2025. He will succeed Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and serve until February 9, 2027. The appointment was confirmed by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who expressed his congratulations and best wishes to Justice Kant via a post on X.

Justice Kant, who hails from Haryana, has had a distinguished legal career. He was born on February 10, 1962, in Petwar village, Hisar district. He completed his schooling in a modest village school and graduated from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, in 1981. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Law from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984.

Beginning his legal career at the District Court in Hisar, he moved to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1985. At just 38, he became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana in 2000. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in March 2001 and was appointed as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in January 2004. In October 2018, he became the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court before his elevation to the Supreme Court in May 2019.

Justice Kant is known for his strong focus on social justice and has participated in significant constitutional matters, including governance and environmental issues. As Chief Justice, he will oversee the Supreme Court during a crucial period, with major cases related to electoral reforms, criminal justice, and digital privacy expected to be heard. His tenure will last for over 14 months, providing him ample opportunity to influence key judicial decisions.
