PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - As the federal government shutdown continues, families who rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance programs are bracing for a possible pause in benefits if Congress fails to reach a funding deal.
In Illinois, about 2 million people rely on SNAP, the country’s largest anti-hunger program, to feed their families. The suspension of benefits will remain in effect until the federal government takes action.
Aubrianna McAlum is a member of one of those families. The pregnant 24-year-old Pekin woman has relied on WIC and SNAP benefits since she was 18. The monthly $530 in assistance helps her feed her two children. McAlum is a stay-at-home mom while her boyfriend works the third shift.
