WASHINGTON (WCSC) - Republican U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham says forcing members of Congress to give up their paychecks during government shutdowns would end shutdowns faster.
Graham introduced a constitutional amendment on Wednesday that would require Congressional members to forfeit their pay for the duration of a government shutdown.
“If members of Congress had to forfeit their pay during government shutdowns, there would be fewer shutdowns and they would end quicker,” he said in a statement. “This is the most constitutionally sound way to deal with this problem.”
The U.S. Constitution requires that the nation’s senators and House members be paid even if the government is shut down. Graham’s amendment would change that.
