Rufus Wainwright made a not-so-subtle change to the Canadian national anthem ahead of Game 5 of the World Series on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium.
The Montreal-raised singer performed in both English and French, but just a few beats in, he swapped out “true patriot love in all of us command” to his version — “True patriot love that only us command.”
If the lyric change rings a bell, then you may remember when fellow Canuck Chantal Kreviazuk made the same tweak during her performance at the 4 Nations Face-Off hockey final in Boston earlier this year.
Kreviazuk defended her version , insisting she was standing up for Canada amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s “51st state” comments, which were rampant at the time.
Needless to say, Canadians were not impressed by Wainwright’s switch
