He was four or five and living in Charleston, MS. It was the early 1940s and the Oscar-winning actor grew up with music. His mother was a musician who played piano, although Freeman doesn’t remember her ever playing the blues. He does, however,remember men with guitars and mason jars filled with moonshine.
