PORTSMOUTH, VA. (WAVY) — Portsmouth Police Chief Stephen Jenkins said total crime numbers are down in the city by 17% when comparing the numbers to 2024.

That figure is for the first nine months of 2025.

"The fact that our crime numbers are trending down is good but we still have some very stubborn numbers that we are having a hard time addressing. Year to date, total crime for the city is down 17%," said Chief Jenkins.

Chief Jenkins held his quarterly forum on crime Wednesday night, highlighting crime statistics and where certain crimes are happening at a higher rate.

Property crime was one of the first topics discussed. During the months of July, August and September for 2025, the city saw a drop in property crimes compared to those months in 2024.
