A man could face further charges after being accused of carrying out a stabbing murder near a shopping centre and trying to rape a young woman a short time later.

Ronald Bruce Murray, 45, faced Cleveland Magistrates Court on Monday after being charged over the death of a 44-year-old man early the previous morning.

Police allege the victim sustained stab wounds near a shopping centre car park at the Brisbane bayside suburb of Manly West.

A large number of officers were called to the scene, where they found the 44-year-old with critical injuries from a "brutal and violent attack", Detective Inspector Wayne Francis said on Sunday.
