Was President Donald Trump threatening to escalate the nuclear arms race in a social media post—or was he just spouting nonsense? A bit of both, it seems.
In a message posted minutes before his meeting in South Korea with China’s President Xi Jingping, Trump wrote, “Because of other countries testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis. That process will begin immediately.”
He later elaborated to reporters that although the U.S. stopped testing nuclear weapons a long time ago, Russia and China were still testing, so we have to start testing again too.
