As families along the U.S.-Mexico border prepare for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), U.S. Customs and Border Protection is reminding travelers to be careful about what agricultural items they bring into the country. The two-day celebration will take place Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1 and 2.

Many of the flowers, fruits and plants used in traditional altars and decorations for the holiday are not allowed to enter the United States because they can carry pests and diseases that harm American farms and the environment.

CBP agriculture specialists often find prohibited items in travelers’ belongings during this time of year. To help protect U.S. agriculture, CBP says travelers should declare all agricultural and plant items when crossing the border.
