NEW DELHI: Justice Surya Kant will take oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on November 24. This was after President Droupadi Murmu approved the appointment. The current Chief Justice B.R. Gavai will retire on November 23. Surya Kant is the next judge in seniority after Gavai. Gavai had recommended Surya Kant as his successor.

Surya Kant's term will end on February 9, 2027. He will be given 14 months of service. He is a native of Hisar, Haryana. Surya Kant will be the first Chief Justice from Haryana.

Surya Kant started his legal practice in Hisar District Court. He became the Advocate General of Haryana at the age of 38. He was appointed as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004 and as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2018. Surya Kant
