The death toll from Hurricane Melissa climbed to at least 29 as residents in Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti began assessing the widespread destruction caused by the catastrophic storm that’s now heading towards Bermuda.
In southeast Jamaica, many residents were picking up what remained of their belongings after the storm blew off the roofs of homes.
“I don’t have a house now,” said a distressed Sylvester Guthrie, a resident of Lacovia in the southern parish of St. Elizabeth.
He said the only valuable possession he had left after the storm was his bicycle.
“I have land in another location that I can build back, but I am going to need help,” the sanitation worker said.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness said up to 90% of roofs in the southwest coastal community of Black River were destroyed.
