STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Heavy rain and high wind pelted Staten Island on Thursday as the borough was hit with a nor’easter-like storm.
It began raining before dawn, though winds picked up in intensity as the morning went on, causing outages, knocking down power lines and prompting bridge restrictions.

More than 1,200 are without power , with large outages reported in Eltingville, Bay Terrace, Oakwood and Travis.
Certain vehicles, including empty trailers, have been banned from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge .
The heaviest downpours are expected late Thursday afternoon into evening .
